Eeva Muilu & Milja Sarkola / In human disguise

Finnish choreographer Eeva Muilu and theater director Milja Sarkola talk about their artistic collaboration in their work “In human disguise”. The work was created in 2009 and deals with nudity and bewilderment.

In the Jardin d’Europe residency, Muilu and Sarkola prepare and plan the continuation of their collaboration. They will share also some of these ideas on Tuesday.

The residency in Bucharest is offered by 4 Culture Association and WASP – Working Art Space and Production, as part of Prix Jardin d’Europe – awarded in 2012 to Eeva Muilu and Milja Sarkola for “In human disguise”.

Eeva Muilu is a choreographer and performer based in Helsinki. She received her MA in Dance from the Theatre Academy of Finland and has also studied at the Amsterdam Theatre School (SNDO).

Muilu has created several stage works and collaborated with other artists, actors, dancers and non-professional performers with various backgrounds. Her works have been performed widely in Finland, Europe, and in Asia. She worked as a house choreographer in Zodiak – Centre for New Dance from 2007 to 2009.

Milja Sarkola is a freelance theatre director and playwright. Sarkola has directed dance pieces for Zodiak – Center for New Dance and written and directed plays for Lilla Teatern and the City Theatre of Kajaani, Finland.

Sarkola was artistic co-director of Helsinki-based Teatteri Takomo with Pauliina Feodoroff (2009-2012). Her latest piece at Theatre Takomo, “Family Member”, was The Performance of the Year 2012 (Thalia Prize).

Luke Jessop / The New Sacred (working title)

This short presentation will be a sharing of the initial ideas for Luke’s first solo creation. The work looks at the dichotomy between the progressive ethos of science in the midst of commonly held religious beliefs.

In addition, exploring the beauty that can be found within scientific theory, which is in fact, based on the world around us, and requires no ‘higher’ being to explain its creation or continued existence.

The presentation will consist of a collection of potential ideas/scenes to be developed further, followed by open feedback from the public.

Luke Jessop entered in the contemporary dance world through a Bboying background, a street dance style originated in USA by Afro-Americans and Puerto-Ricans in the 70’, which soon became very popular around the world. Luke graduated from the University of Bedfordshire, England in 2011 and began working with 2Faced Dance Company in their triple bill “In The Dust”.

In 2012 Luke moved to Brussels to work with Ultima Vez / Wim Vandekeybus for the creation of “booty Looting” as well as to perform in other company works. Luke regularly teaches internationally and is now beginning to develop his own work.

The residency is offered by 4Culture Association and WASP – Working Art Space and Production in the frame of Jardin d’Europe Wild Cards, in collaboration with Ultima Vez and Workspace Brussels.
