Denise Lobonț: Unweaving Stereotypes / Life Long Burning 2020

Proiectul artistei urmărește o interogare a mentalității stereotipale și a segregării sociale rezultate din prejudecăți în spațiul românesc față de femeile de etnie romă pornind de la exprimarea vestimentară și aproprierea unei moșteniri culturale de către consumul de masă.

Persoanele fotografiate s-au născut și lucrează în România în diferite domenii: medicină, poliție, muzică sau științe politice. În cadru este folosit un material textil “gypsy” inautentic și exoticizant care sublinează presupuneri clișeice ignorante din mașinăria imaginarului colectiv asupra istoriei protagonistelor.

Proiectul descompune mecanismul prejudecăților și contestă generalizarea stereotipară aducând în prim plan experinața zilnică a acestor fete.

Denise Lobonț (n.1995, Deva) este absolventa programului de licență în cadrul secției Foto-Video la Universitatea Națională de Arte București în anul 2017. Pe parcursul universitar a beneficiat de o bursa de studiu din partea unei universități partenere din Franța, iar post-licenta a completat un internship in Paris timp de 5 luni într-un studio foto. În prezent este recent absolventă a programulului masteral al aceleiași secții. Temele de care este interesată sunt minoritățile etnice, identitatea de gen, moda în context social. Un laitmotiv al proiectelor sale este demontarea clișeelor de gen, colaborând cu diverși artiști sau modele din scena underground a Bucureștiului.

Unweaving Stereotypes a fost dezvoltat in cadrul proiectului LIFE LONG BURNING 2020, la WASP Working Art Space and Production.

The project aims to interrogate the stereotypical mentality and social segregation resulting from prejudice in the Romanian territory towards Roma women, starting from clothing expression and cultural appropriation of a heritage by mass consumption.

People photographed are born and work in Romania in different domains like medicine, police, music or political sciences. The picture uses an inauthentic and exoticizing “gypsy” textile material that emphasizes ignorant cliche assumptions from the collective imaginary machine about the history of the protagonists, highlighting their daily experience.

This project unweaves the mechanism of prejudices and challenges the stereotypical generalization bringing to the fore daily experiences of these girls.

Denise Lobonț (b. 1995, Deva) is a graduate of the bachelor’s degree within the Photo-Video Section at the Bucharest National University of Arts in 2017. During the academic period, she received a scholarship from a partner university in France and the period after the bachelor’s degree has been completed by an internship in Paris for 5 months in a photo studio. Currently she has just completed her master’s programme in the same section. Themes that interest her are ethnical minorities, gender identity and fashion in the social context. A leitmotif of her projects is dismantling the gender clichés, collaborating with different artists or models from Bucharest’s underground scenes.
