Launched this summer, În Fața Blocului is a volume comprising of all the games the Romanian generation that wore their home keys around the neck used to play. The books consist of a collection of 55 games and “phases”, including instructions, to the games many of us used to lose track of time playing in front of our blocks, with chalk or rubber balls in our hands.
Remember 1, 2, 3 to the wall stop, The Elastic or The Goat? Throughout this workshop, adults will have the chance to travel back in time to their own childhood, while assisting or actively participating in helping the younger generation (re)discover a glimpse of Romanian urban folklore, in a great, post-industrial setting. Each game has its own card, so that they can be taken outside and played with for hours.
Vlad Tomei and Mihai Gheorghe both work in advertising — one is a copywriter, while the other is an art director. They started thinking about this project about four years ago, while talks with their friends that started with “can you remember how x… was played?” became more often, proportional to the number of answer variations. The book was published with the intention of producing a timeless object that will keep Romania’s Generation X memories alive.
