▪ FILM – curatorial project ▪ Iași and Bucharest openings, experimental film workshop

4Culture, in partnership with WASP Studios, “George Enescu” National University of Arts and the Center for Contemporary Photography in Iasi, will launch on Wednesday, September 26, 2018, at 18:00, at the apARTe Gallery in Iasi, the first exhibition of the FILM – curatorial project that will be open until October 7, followed by the opening on October 12 at WASP Working Art Space and Production in Bucharest.

Matei Bejenaru, the exhibition’s curator, together with the artists Catalin Soreanu, Lavinia German, Ciprian Ciuclea, Diana Dulgheru, Irina Botea Bucan, Jon  Dean and Sorin Vreme propose an analysis of the status of the film during accelerated digitization as well as the types of narrative they develop in relation to the memory of the environment. The motion picture stored on a movie, magnetic tape or on a hard disk or memory card becomes a dynamic image with very different features, from the high-tech cinema industry to the poor image, defined as such by the artist and theorist Hito Steyerl.

The exhibition includes films and video installations, photographs and experimental sound projects created by Romanian artists who are constantly working with this type of environment and challenge the artist’s film in relation to classical cinema, the contemporary art gallery and online media. Contrary to the situation in the cinema, the spectator can walk in the exhibition space, having a mobile and dynamic relationship with the projection screens. Some of the projects exposed explore new forms of narrative in the dynamic image based on experimental ways of montage, time manipulation, and others will generate new interactions of spectators with film devices in the idea of amplifying the visual perception of space.

”Before being a visual show, the film is a way of thinking in images (Philippe-Alain Michaud, Sur le film, Editions Macula, Paris, 2016, p.7). The evolution from the desire to dynamically represent the visible by dematerializing it, in the classic film, to analysing the formal structures of the images, as well as their recording and designing in the experimental cinema, led to the integration of the film environment into galleries and museums along with other forms of contemporary art. Here, visual artists invest the film with new valences and meanings due to the merging of the intricate properties of the environment, light, duration, movement, with new ones related to the physical presence, device and projection surface, the beam of light. Thus, the film is not only a representation, but also a physical presence in a space through the devices that make it possible to perceive it”, Matei Bejenaru declares.

The project, designed in two dimensions, also includes a workshop which is named “The present room” and coordinated by Lavinia German, between October 6 – 10, at WASP Working Art Space and Production.

The workshop aims at exploring the room-time-body relationship, interrogating the specifics of the video environment, the artistic practices in the field of experimental film and the conceptual methods of constructing the dynamic image. The experimental films created during the workshop will be integrated in the Bucharest exhibition on October 12 – 20, 2018.
