WASP Studios announces the participation of artists Maria Balabas, Robert Balan, Elena Copuzeanu and Jean Lorin Sterian at the first laboratory of RAW Practices in Performance Art programme, coordinated by Swedish choreographer Mårten Spångberg between October 1 – 5, 2018.

RAW Practices in Performance Art is an international artistic research project, organized between 2018 and 2019 in Bucharest, Iasi (Romania) and Montpellier (France). The programme includes several workshops, individual and group meetings, informal presentations and public sessions.

The participants of the first laboratory were nominated following a call for artistic projects launched by WASP Studios in the summer of 2018, while the criteria underlying their selection were the quality of the approach and the innovative character of the proposals, as well as their previous experience in similar research programs. The four artists and their coordinator presented the results of the laboratory at eXplore Festival # 13, organized during October 2018 in Bucharest.

Active on the contemporary dance stage for more than 20 years, Swedish choreographer Mårten Spångberg has created his own choreographies starting 1999, from solos to large-scale works presented in international tournaments. Based on an experimental and extensive practice, his artistic style is reflected in a variety of formats and expressions. Mårten has considerable experience in teaching both theory and practice and has published several books and articles on dance art.

The RAW Practices in Performance Art project, created at WASP Studios’s initiative, aims to improve the infrastructure in the field of contemporary art, mobility and artistic research, as well as the conditions of production and archiving of the creative process and results. At the same time, the programme aims to contribute to widening access to education and culture for young people in Romania, by providing free of charge the creative environment and the necessary resources to support new artistic productions and their dissemination to the public.
