WASP Studios presents in October the results of the project Practising solo collective, carried out online and at WASP Working Art Space and Production between July-October 2020, results consisting of new solo creations by Flavia Giurgiu, Geta Corca, Diana Spiridon, Ilinca Hărnuț, Aurora Király, curator Andreea Căpitănescu.

Practising solo collective is a collective research approach proposed by the curator of the project of a group of contemporary artists, that agreed to expose themselves and explore, in the personal creative process, information on practices and approaches belonging to female figures from different fields than those they commonly use  in their current research.

Finding its inspiration in references – iconic images and films from art history, dance history and contemporary performance, „Practising solo collective” develops poems into images, it questions the relation with time, different levels of reality and image.

Through a cinematographic deconstruction, the project overexposes themes about identity and feminist experiment, both in the domestic space and in nature. The visual references include representative artists for the history of feminism, offering the historical perspective of diversity and evolutions of expression through dance, performance, photography and video-art

 I could no longer play is a video tribute to photographer, Francesca Woodman, (April 3, 1958 – January 19, 1981). Those who die young are always shrouded in mystery, leaving us with questions about what they would have become if they had lived. Suicide is a taboo subject, which attracts fascination, especially when the person is known and talented. Francesca died at the age of only twenty-two, leaving behind an exceptional legacy. The film tells the story of Francesca and was created by reinterpreting some photos of the artist.

Georgeta Corca is a graduate of the “Andrei Mureșanu” Pedagogical High School in Brașov and a graduate of the Faculty of Theater within the University of Theater and Cinematography “I.L. Caragiale ”, Choreography section. Her training as a performer has its roots in artistic gymnastics and capoeira. Over time, she gained experience participating in numerous workshops and collaborated with various choreographers such as Thomas Stayert, Sergiu Matiș, Valentina de Piante Niculae, Simona Deaconescu, Inger Reidun Olsen and many others. She is the winner of the ALT National Choreography Contest 2014.

FLAVIA GIURGIU ‘Faceless’ /  Performance installation

I forgot the faces. The light makes a streak on the wall. I can remember the shape. I look there until the streak widens and the light grows larger and I enter in that space completely.

And I remember.

All.

All I have forgotten.

Flavia Giurgiu graduated ”Octavian Stroia” Dramatic Art and Choreography College and Faculty of Theatre and Television, ”Babeș-Bolyai” University. Cluj-Napoca. In her artistic practice, Flavia wants to combine the scenic movement and contemporary dance with the performative art and also with the theatrical space. In 2019, Flavia Giurgiu was invited as performer within the new production, MONUMENT 0.8 Manifestations, by Eszter Salamon, a Studio E.S / Elodie Perrin and WASP Studios production, curated by Andreea Căpitănescu. The work was presented for the first time at Kaaitheater, Bruxelles, within Europalia Arts Festival in January 2020.

ILINCA HĂRNUȚ‚ Nevermind the Big Picture’ / Performative Video Installation

The installation explores the ambivalent relationship of the contemporary individual with reality, the inert sliding on the concrete surface towards the hypnotic vortex of the hyperreal. Initially inspired by the way Laurie Simmons uses dolls as avatars of the author in a quasi-utopian world, the installation “Nevermind the Big Picture” uses the immobility of the two toy women as a bridge between the oppressive and dysfunctional reality captured in the video projection and the rhythmic video frenzy of the small screen. The two dolls function as symbolic representatives: artificial figurines, optimized, in line with social expectations and the pressure to embody the lack of reaction and freezing into beauty, materializing the ideal of femininity that we still can not get rid of.

Ilinca Hărnuț is an actress, screenwriter and multimedia artist. She graduated from UNATC I. L. Caragiale, acting department, and is currently a PhD student at UNARTE. Through the work of cross-sectoral artistic research, she tries to explore the areas of intersection between reality and fiction and how to recompose reality as fiction and through the prism of fiction.

AURORA KIRÁLY ‚50s sau Soft Despair’ / Installation laboratory

“50s or Soft Despair” is an installation about the biological and psychological threshold of middle age, about moments of balance and analysis, about impulses coming from society at a time when new changes in perception are required; but also about ‘dumb’ states, about unrecognized or unaccepted desires, about the remodeling of identity at different ages.

The installation uses a series of female silhouettes in selected positions in the dance area (following artists who forced creative barriers – conceptually or through the way they used movement and body, but also forgotten artists, whose contribution is under / reevaluated), relying on a sculptural theatricality: the silhouettes illustrate both idealized or romantic bodies and movements and bodies that speak of female power and determination or of conflicting states, etc. The silhouettes intersect these vertical planes, a balance between abstract elements with a scenographic / background role and these figurative presences – body ‘solos’. All elements are made of felt, a material that has both softness and firmness.

Aurora Király approaches the field of contemporary art from various perspectives, as an artist, curator, cultural manager. She has been teaching at the Department of Photography and Dynamic Imagery of the National University of Arts in Bucharest since 2007. Her current works call into question the sources the contemporary artist uses in choosing the themes and how he or she relates to the recent context / history / art history. She is also preocuppied by the influence of international trends and the art market on artistic production, the creation and practices of artists who “listen” and assume their own “voice”.

 The 50s or Soft Despair installation was presented to the public for the first time at eXplore festival # 15, on October 17 and 18, at WASP Working Art Space and Production and online on the facebook pages of eXplore festival, WASP Studios and 4Culture. DIANA SPIRIDON‚ Reenactment Francesca Woodman’ / Performance

The idea for the solo started with the publication of the writer Charlotte Perkins Gilman, ‘The yellow wallpaper’, from 1892. The work, a symbol of the American feminist current, has as main character a woman suffering from a mental illness, as a result of which she becomes obsessed with the wallpaper of the room in where she lives. We found a similar atmosphere in the photos of the artist Francesca Woodman. The solo is a reenactment of selected works of the artist, some of them becoming stylized in motion. Together with some recorded passages from the short story, they will be the sound background of the performance, forming a connection between the two artists.

Diana Spiridon graduated in 2007 from the “Floria Capsali” Choreography High School in Bucharest, and in the period 2007-2009 she studied in the ‘Bachelor of dance’ program at the Rotterdam Dance Academy, CODARTS – University of Arts. In 2013 she was part of the project “An immaterial retrospective of the Venice Biennale” created by Alexandra Pirici and Manuel Pelmuș, presented at the Venice Biennale of Contemporary Art.

The 15th edition of eXplore festival – Bucharest International Dance and Performace Festival continues online and on air with performances, discussions and video installations. Works and discussions with and by Eszter Salamon, Manuel Pelmuș, Roel Heremans, Ilinca Păun Constantinescu, Micheline Dufert will be presented until October 25, 2020, on explore festival Facebook page.
eXplore festival #15 proposes a series of forays-essays on the relationship between movement, space and time, from the perspective of a dialogue between body-image-sound. What other moment would be more appropriate to experience new ways of artistic, real, authentic existence? What better time than now to be (and otherwise) together?

A discussion about an artistic practice in between disciplines. About artistic performative strategies as a response to the current moment and imagining other forms in which we can act and be together.
Manuel Pelmus lives and works in Oslo and Bucharest. He is one of the most influential artists of the “new performance”, being interested in the last decade to reimagine the role of performance in the context of visual arts. In recent years, his projects have been presented at Para Site, Hong Kong (2017 – 2018), Tate Modern, London and Tate Liverpool (2016); Ludwig Museum, Cologne (2016); Off-Biennale Budapest (2015 and 2017); Kyiv Biennale (2015); Centre Pompidou, Paris (2014); Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven (2014); Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw (2014); Para Site, Hong Kong (2014); The Venice Biennale (2013), among others. In 2012, he was awarded the Berlin Art Prize for performance arts and the prize for excellence from the National Dance Center of Bucharest in 2014. Starting October 2019, Manuel Pelmus is a “research felow” at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts (KHIO).

Roel Heremans is a conceptual artist working with sound & technology. In most of his works he composes fragments of audio that trigger the imagination of visitors in order to create immersive group experiences. As a result, the visitors simultaneously become actors, witnesses, performers and reenactors of mental and physical processes of thought and movement, where collective performances encounter individual reactions and vice versa. By activating people in this way, Heremans generates a simulation of the contemporary world, one in which every individual is part of their own self-mirroring bubble, one in which the visitor, with their experience, remains the artist’s only metaphorical canvas.
Roel Heremans has presented in the frame of eXplore festival #15, on 17th October, at the The National Romanian Literature Museum,  DUET-C Eliade – an interactive experience for 2 to 8 visitors. This work was developed through a residency at WASP Working Art Space and Production, Bucharest, after the research of the theories and philosophy of Mircea Eliade. In ”Duet-C Eliade”, the Belgian artist creates true choreographical mental experiences. Heremans uses specific architectural models to create temporal spaces in which sound stimulates the processes of thinking and changes the visual perception. Heremans investigates the late philosophy work of Mircea Eliade, developing a participative interactive imaginary choreography.
The event will take place in three different spaces: Ligia and Pompiliu Macovei Art Collection, Sutu Palace, without public participation. The public will be able to experience this performance on air on Radio Guerilla, where Manuel Pelmuș will narrate the actions of the performers.
Untitled (2020), Collective Exhibition blurs the borders between a sound installation and a live performance. It happens simultaneously in different places through live sound and movement and imagines togetherness using time and space as its main dramaturgical material during times when being together and sharing the same physical space is put to a radical test. It is a permanent collection of gestures produced through a live practice which is usually associated with impermanence. People and places move together at a distance united by sound and movement, and by proposing trust, care and forms of solidarity.
Micheline Dufert – urban explorer, in the company of her partner Francis Pourcel, route tracers who break the territorial barriers of their city in Charleroi. Through their blog – cheminsdesterrils.be – and their exploratory guided tours, Micheline questions the links of love / hate towards the landscape. Micheline tries telling a story about the landscape and together they “made” the Black Loop.
The Black Loop: through industrial landscapes, post-industrial, urban and semi-rural areas of Charleroi, a signposted trail connected to the Great European Hiking Trails runs along the city’s founding watercourses, along with castles and industrial cathedrals, ancient lanes, sneaks into an English park, crosses old railway lines reassigned for the walk, invites people into a glaucous tunnel, passes through the walls, explores the remains of a mining site, a walk in a reinvented forest, climbing heaps of balconies on the city, crosses slag-territories.
Born in Bucharest in 1982, Ilinca Păun Constantinescu earned her PhD degree in architecture in 2013. She currently practices architecture at Ideogram Studio, teaches theory of architecture at “Ion Mincu” University of Architecture and Urbanism Bucharest, and leads cultural projects within the IDEILAGRAM Association. Together with her team from IDEILAGRAM, she edited `Shrinking Cities in Romania. Orașe românești în declin` (DOM publishers&MNAC Press 2019) and realized researches and exhibitions such as: Shrinking Cities in Romania (MNAC Bucharest, 2016), On Housing (Timco Halls Timișoara, 2018), Uranus Now (MNAC, 2019, initiated by S.Ghenciulescu and D.Hasnas). For the past years she has been actively involved in the post-industrial regeneration project of Petrila, one of the largest participatory project ever carried out in Romania, initiated by an internationally recognized local artist, taken over by a group of architects in a snowball effect.
Manon Istasse is anthropologist. She got her Ph.D degree in 2013 after investigating why and how non-professionals (or amateurs) get involved in knowing and preserving cultural heritage. She carried out researches in Morocco (Fez), France (Amiens and Lyon) and Belgium (Charleroi). She currently works at the Charleroi Cultural Center (Eden), where she gives interest – among others – to the local territory – Charleroi and its surroundings. Knowing and sharing about this territory is a Cultural Center’s core mission. It leads to a variety of activities : conferences, workshops, digital participative mapping, and walks with Micheline et Francis for discovering the territory and its landscapes.
Eszter Salamon is a choreographer, artist and performer. She lives and works between Berlin, Paris and Brussels. She is the laureate of the Evens Art Prize 2019. Salamon uses choreography as an activating and organizing agency between various media such as image, sound, music, text, voice, bodily movement and actions. Her works evolve through various formats and aesthetics, methodologies and poetics, and put to work a wide spectrum of expressions. The works are often based on thorough research on particular issues such as female autobiography, non-human subjectivities, and hidden power structures sustaining the hierarchical systems of artistic and educational economies of productions. She conceives of choreography as a means to reflect on the value of knowledge, gestures and images. By exploring how bodies are vectors of the circulation and transformation of meaning, sheinvests in creating trans-national and trans-historical narrations.
Emil Ivănescu is an architect and president of the Romanian Order of Architects – Bucharest Branch. In 2004, he graduated CIon Mincu” University of Architecture and Urbanism and in 2011 the PhD in architecture, with the work: „Corpul postorganic și arhitectura ambiguității” (”The Postorganic Body and the Architecture of Ambiguity”). In 2012 Emil won the contest for designing the Romanian Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale and in 2014 the design for the Romanian Cultural Institute Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale.

Andreea Căpitănescu is a PhD candidate at UNArte Bucharest, artist, choreographer and performer, president and co-founder partner of 4Culture Association. Judith State, nominated by 4Culture Association, as a Creative Crossroads artist, within the European network Life Long Burning – Towards A Sustainable Eco-System for Contemporary Dance in Europe, invites the audience to take part to a first journey on the artistic process that involves her last new choreographic piece, that will be later presented in 2021.
“It’s hard to create something, to do actually anything at all – the regular things – without being constantly reminded that the world – meaning each and every one of us – is in a tremendous shift that will hopefully subsequently forever change our old ways. Now, perhaps more than ever, it’s time to drop the need to perform, to produce, to show – all of which stand at the top of our daily life necessities and activities – and embrace as much as we can the authenticity we talk so often about but seem to actually forget. Maybe there’s a lot in doing not much or nothing at all. Maybe less spectacular and just regular makes it human even more.”

Judith will benefit from the support of the European network for her artistic research and for the development of a new choreographic creation.
Judith State is a professional dancer and choreographer based in Bucharest, with a classical ballet foundation and a foreign language bachelor’s degree in English and Spanish. She likes to search and manifest herself through movement, acting and singing and, in the past few years, she’s been juggling with these means of expression in contemporary performances, theatre works and film.
Her current research (which also involves musician Radu Dumitriu and István Téglás, performer, deals with the processes of remembering and traveling back in time to the very personal layers of childhood and her half Hungarian roots, tackling questions such as “how the intercultural mixture sets the prospects of an “undecided” personality?” and “how much do we belong to our early experiences and our molding and interpretation of them?”. It is thus mainly an autobiographical approach that generally combines movement, spoken text, singing and electronic live music all together.
She is also interested in ways of “arranging” and choreographing ordinary, pedestrian movement and transforming usual bodily sounds into music, and she will focus in her following work on the “humanity” of everyday life in movement.
EMBER it’s been developed within Hardrive – Deep inside,  a cultural project co-financed by the Administration of the National Cultural Fund.

Collaborative performance

 

The work is a hybrid version (word often used lately to designate both face-to-face and mediated relationships, through various online platforms) of the sound installation 61-87-88 Clouds Will Rain for You (Work by Iosif Király and Christine Ulke, dedicated to Fluxus artist Geoffrey Hendricks, who was their professor at the Sommer Akademie Salzburg 1992. The first presentation took place in Salzburg in the same year, and later, larger versions were presented at UNAgaleria and WASP Working Art Space and Production in Bucharest, Royal Academy of Arts Antwerp, Music – Impulse Center for Music, Dommelhof, Belgium (last two at the Europalia festival, 2019), from which it comes.

WASP Studios invited the two artists to conceive a new artistic creation that can be presented (depending on the fragile and unpredictable situation generated by the pandemic), both in “on site” and “online”. This time, the sound is mediated electronically, through various captures, processing and spatializations.

IOSIF KIRÁLY is an artist, architect and educator who lives in Bucharest. He has participated in numerous national and international art exhibitions and events, both individually and in various collaborative projects, the most well-known project being the subREAL group.

He benefited from scholarships and artistic residencies, he has also participated and coordinated cultural and documentary programs. His works are in numerous art collections, both public and private.

He is one of the founding members (in 1995) of the Photography and Dynamic Department of the National University of Arts, Bucharest, where he is currently a professor. Starting 2013, he holds a course within the visual studies master of arts at SNSPA.

CĂTĂLIN CREȚU is a composer, multimedia artist, scientific researcher at the Center for Electroacoustic and Multimedia Music of the National University of Music in Bucharest (catalincretu.ro). His artistic practice cover a wide area, from composition for acoustic instruments to experiments audio-visual interactivity field. He published a reference book on the implementation of new technologies in new music: ‚De la sunetul sinus la anatomia umbrei. Perspective tehnologice în muzica nouă’ (From sine sound to shadow anatomy. Technological perspectives in new music. UNMB / Vellant Publishing House, 2015.

The two dolls function as symbolic representatives: artificial figurines, optimized, in line with social expectations and the pressure to embody the lack of reaction and freezing in beauty, materializing the ideal of femininity that we still cannot get rid of.

Ilinca Hărnuț is an actress, screenwriter and multimedia artist. She has a BA in Acting, from UNATC ”I. L. Caragiale” and is currently earning her PHD from UNARTE. Through her transectorial artistic research, she attempts to explore the areas where reality meets fiction and the manner in which we tend to rebuild reality as fiction and through the lens of fiction.

Denise Lobonț: Unweaving Stereotypes / Life Long Burning 2020

Multimedia installation

The project aims to interrogate the stereotypical mentality and social segregation resulting from prejudice in the Romanian territory towards Roma women, starting from clothing expression and cultural appropriation of a heritage by mass consumption.

People photographed are born and  work in Romania in different domains like medicine, police, music or political sciences. The picture uses an inauthentic and exoticizing “gypsy” textile material that emphasizes ignorant cliche assumptions from the collective imaginary machine about the history of the protagonists, highlighting their daily experience.

This project unweaves the mechanism of prejudices and challenges the stereotypical generalization bringing to the fore daily experiences of these girls.

Denise Lobonț (b. 1995, Deva) is a graduate of the bachelor’s degree within the Photo-Video Section at the Bucharest National University of Arts in 2017. During the academic period, she received a scholarship from a partner university in France and the period after the bachelor’s degree has been completed by an internship in Paris for 5 months in a photo studio. Currently she has just completed her master’s programme in the same section. Themes that interest her are ethnical minorities, gender identity and fashion in the social context. A leitmotif of her projects is dismantling the gender clichés, collaborating with different artists or models from Bucharest’s underground scenes.

Super:Serios is a design studio that develops interdisciplinary projects starting from and pursuing playing experiences in close relation to the urban context. Started as a dialogue between a toy designer and an urban architect, super:serious mix the tangible with the digital in their projects in order to research where the games principles and strategies can lead in exploring real contexts.

Super:Serios team members are Maria Mandea, Teodora Ungureanu and Sebastian Comanescu. The concept of the game started from super serious discussions with Diana Michiu and Raisa Parpala.

Performance Situation Room – the space where new media technologies meet performing arts

4Culture Association launched on www.4culture.ro a new performative web installation, realized in the frame of Performance Situation Room, a cultural project co-financed by the Ministry of Culture, through Acces Online Programme and supported by the european network and project Life Long Burning, co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union.

Performance Situation Room is a space for reflection, which gives the opportunity to performers, players and to the public to test and apply spontaneously new formats and new scenaries in a virtual space, through games and experimentation.

When all the social, public professional and cultural live spaces are disappearing one by one from our routine, reuniting in a unique private space, what happens to our perception on time and environment?

The proposed concept introduce a new possible scenario by questioning the different levels of reality and the relationship between image representation and time. Situated at the convergence between art and technology, the performative space develops new virtual dimmensions accesible to the general public through an interactive web application. The performers and their audience share the same virtual space, exploring new versions of the temporal existance.

This new visual perspective of the digital space – as the main medium of artistic manifestation in the pandemic period that we are facing, it offers new possible ways of artistic expression and conceptual approach, and above all, the opportunity for common exploratory collaborations.
