SOFT INSIDEOUT Workshop, Valentina de Piante

Movement workshop following the Feldenkrais method
My meeting with the Feldenkrais method has profoundly affected the way I dance, create and teach. In 2013 I started specializing at the Istituto per la Formazione Feldenkrais in Milan, founded by Mara Della Pergola, a direct student of Moshe Feldenkrais, and for many years I have been researching with different groups, from professionals to amateurs, the impact body study has on our personalities and on our way of being.

What is movement?
The Feldenkrais method starts by questioning the body.
It considers the movement as a powerful instrument of knowledge, a part of a complex phenomenon that encompasses emotions and thinking.
Changing the way we normally move actually means changing our thinking and emotional patterns.

How can we become more aware of ourselves through movement?
Each of us has a unique way of moving and holds an infinite potential of actions. Just that, in lack of constant exploration and body awareness, these possibilities of action never materialize.

We feel before we understand.
This method teaches us that creativity, movement and sensibility in what we do changes the way we think and behave.
For Feldenkrais thought, perception and emotion are all present while we act.

The workshop
The method relies on organic learning and addresses any person who wants to get to know themselves better: from young mothers, to fathers and grandparents, from dancers to psychologists and physiotherapists, from professionals of various specialties to athletes. Through a series of lessons that eviscerate the infinite combinations and components of action, we get to reinvent neuromotor habitual schemes through playful and creative exploration. In this deconstruction of action schemes, agonist and antagonist muscles find balance and once tensions disappear, emotions, images, ideas and other associations start to manifest themselves. In this context, everyone gets to free themselves from patterns, anxiety, conflicting emotional states, while accessing their own potential and a harmonious and positive way of being.

Objectives
The entire workshop will be as if we would learn, for a second time, in infinite ways, beyond our habits and the blockages we identify with. Without exterior models and through our sensations, we will become capable to free ourselves from unnecessary tensions, disorganized breathing, hurry, or the need to satisfy someone. Feldenkrais says:

“We don’t know ourselves. Actually, and you will realize this in a few minutes, the way we know ourselves doesn’t allow us to have real control upon ourselves. (…) You are not the ones who act out, but your pains, your illness, your inabilities, old learned habits, that you can’t even remember: these dictate your actions.”

Valentina de Piante Niculae is a choreographer and dancer, with a PhD in Performance Arts. She is Assistant Professor at the Choreography section of UNATC I.L. Caragiale in Bucharest. As a choreographer, she studies the co-present of different types of body intelligences, a route from the biological to the imaginary, that integrates different levels of consciousness: emotional, sensory, cognitive.

She participated in courses and workshops held by Lola Keraly, Yasuko Yokoshi, D.D. Dorvillier, Miguel Gutierrez, Ori Flomin, Gwen Welliver, Serenella Fonzar, Laura Aris, Odette Guimond, Mark Tompkins, Lisa Nelson, David Zambrano, Inge Kaindlstorfer, Yvan Wolf, Joseph Nadj, Anouk Van Dijk, Abbondanza-Bertoni, Roberto Galvan, among others.

She is a visiting professor at various universities and research institutes. In 2009 she participated in the TTT – Teaching The Teachers – Bucharest seminar, along Jan Ritsema, Bojana Cvejic, Jan Kopp and Jennifer Lacey. Starting the autumn of 2013, she began training in the Feldenkrais method at the Feldenkrais-Milan 8 Institute to become a practitioner of the method.

Tell Your Own Story! Workshop, Simona Deaconescu

#dance #reality #picture #freedom

The purpose of a magician is to amaze his audience through tricks that create an illusion of the impossible. We know that magic is a mechanism, however, we love to be surprised. The same thing happens to dance nowadays: the stage becomes a picture in perpetual motion, bodies are augmented and distorted by the power of projection, coupled with technological innovations.

We are explorers by nature. If in the last decade dance served as a language interesting to explore in film, we propose the reverse of this ratio: cinema language serves movement, enhances body inventiveness and becomes accessible to all. The world is changing and thus, dance changes too.

Throughout our 8 sessions we will discover:

  • innovative dance techniques,
  • interesting camera movements,
  • improvisations that increase distributive attention,
  • angulations and projection surface of the most diverse kinds,
  • how we can use gravity to generate impossible movements and
  • how we can enhance these by using video effects.

The aim is that the image becomes an extension of the body, while the studio turns into a portal to parallel realities. The workshop structure is live action, relaxed, playful, and addressed to the curious.

During this workshop we will move a lot, courageously, in many places, at different tempos.

Simona Deaconescu studied choreography and film direction in parallel, her aesthetic approach being interdisciplinary and inspired by people with special abilities and bold ideas.

Simona is the artistic director of the Tangaj Dance collective and has created some of the most courageous choreographic pieces in the Romanian contemporary dance scene of the past two years: “0001 | the dream factory”, “Silent Places” and “0002 | birdville”, as parts of a serial project that researches dance in relationship with technological development. In the summer of 2014, Simona receives one of the most coveted European scholarships, the danceWEB scholarship offered by the Life Long Burning network in the frame of ImpulsTanz International Dance Festival Vienna and two artistic residences: one at WASP — Working Art Space and Production, offered by the 4 Culture Association and one in the Battery Dance Company New York studios, to complete the making of the Birdville choreographic interactive extravaganza, with a joint team of Romanian and American dancers, a show presented in the frame of eXplore dance festival #9.

Her desire to combine dance and film took shape in 2013, through the making of the Silent Places short, which enjoys a broad distribution at worldwide festivals of the genre. The film had its European premiere at “Loikka Dance Film Festival” (FIN), opened the “POOL – International TanzFilmPlattform” (DE), was projected as part of “Festivalul Filmului European” (RO), “International Screendance Festival” (USA), “Sans Souci Festival of Dance Cinema” (USA), “Ammutinamenti Film Festival” (IT) and will soon be projected at the “San Francisco Dance Film Festival” (USA) and the “Bucharest International Experimental Film Festival” (RO).

Until 2013, when her attention was directed entirely toward the development of an interdisciplinary artistic collective, Simona was a co-founder of the “Secția de Coregrafie” Association, along which she realized projects like “DNA” (the first online dance magazine dedicated to choreography arts) and “Cartierul de Dans” (a curatorial program dedicated to the young generation of choreographers and performers). Simona is actively involved in the development of contemporary art and is preoccupied by dissolving the barriers between various artistic approaches, in the fall of 2014 being part of the X Platform team (an new media arts exhibition, held at WASP — Working Art Space and Production).

Simona participates in workshops with both local and international choreographers, deepening innovative dance techniques and ways to stimulate creativity alongside Anne-Marie Cunningham, Ivonne Ramos, Natașa Murariu, Konstantin Mihos, Anna Wehsarg, Mat Voorter, Yael Orni, Kira Kirsch, Gerald Kurdian, Bruno Caverna, Ko Murobushi, David Wampach, Chris Haring, Doris Uhlich, Alva Noe, Saju Hari, Laura Aris, German Juaregui.

She started choreographing at 21, realizing the university projects: “Time Quartet” (an adaptation after Requiem, by Hanoch Levin), a project realized under the high patronage of the Royal House, “Alice în țara minciunilor”, presented at CNDB and at the “Ludovic Spiess” Experimental Studio for Opera and Ballet of the Romanian Opera in Bucharest, for which she receives the prize for the best choreographer in the UNATC Graduated Gala, as well as her masters piece, “Undeva. Cândva”. She realized the choreography for the “Omega Rose” feature film (directed by: Alexandru Dorobanțu), the “Maia” short (directed by: Adela Cotimanis) and the “1940” personal experiment (supported by Media Pro Pictures studios), collaborating in parallel as a screenwriter with the Media Pro and Intact Media trusts.

At the invitation of curator Igor Mocanu, she realizes a choreographic lab in 2014 – “Border Body” (presented at the Allegra Nomad Gallery), along some of the most beloved performers in Bucharest, as well as the visual artist Dilmana Yordanova. Currently, Simona focuses on developing the Tangaj Dance collective.

Contemporary Dance Fusion Workshop, Judith State

This workshop is addressed to all those passionate about exploring contemporary dance and its adjacent forms.

“While working at WASP throughout the past year with people who had started their meeting with dance from point zero, and observing in them a remarkable capacity of adaptation and evolution, I decided to continue this series of workshops with a new module in which the material will be structured progressively, having a more intense approach, which will be finalized with a public presentation. Participation in the final presentation will be optional, however participants will be encouraged to experiment what could be their “first meeting with the audience”.

The workshop will include technical, improvisation, freedom of expression, play, relaxation and breathing exercises, combining contemporary dance with jazz, hip-hop and musicality elements, which will bring the dancers in front of their own selves, free, stripped of thoughts and ready to express their feelings through movement.”

Judith State is a professional dancer whose mentality is directed towards a complex and diverse approach of movement, as well as a harmonious fusion between these diverse and apparently contradictory components, musicality and interiorisation. Permanently searching for new experiences, she is interested in traveling, meeting and working with various choreographers whose styles vary from contemporary to jazz, street jazz and hip-hop, training both in New York (Broadway Dance Center), London and Gothenburg, as well as in Romania.

She is the founder of DaDans, a program throughout which professional contemporary dancers have access to an intensive yearly training program led by international choreographers. Among the choreographers she was lucky to work and train extensively with, Massimo Gerardi, Brice Mousset, Dana Foglia, Travis Wall and Billy Bell are to be named, while Luam, Jared Grimes, Jared Jenkins, Derrek Mitchell, Candace Brown, Derrell Bullock, Neil Schwartz, Hollywood and Joanna Numata are to be mentioned in relation to the street-jazz and hip-hop styles.

Ex/tensionS, work-in-progress

31.10.2014 / 19:30 / WASP
work in progress presentation + feedback session

From her first solo, A l’endroit…, five years ago, Caroline Grosjean has been holding herself back from falling, traveling through different perceptions, paying close attention to people around while technically focusing on her body, finding support by investing stories or zooming in on small details, moving from inside to outside and from outside to inside. Since then, she has carried on creating pieces that actively involve the body, even when the movement is invisible. Through her work, Caroline creates multiple images that stay, remain or move, putting different actions, times, intensities and roles into perspective.

Through Ex/tensionS, she interrogates the idea of endless falling again, continuing to shift references and working in different spaces — from the neutrality of a dance studio to the effervescence of a city. An abstract of her work so far, the performance will not occur on stage, but will exist by shifting the gesture in different spaces and through new media. Photos and videos authorize playing with a lot of different scales, zooming and opening the frame. They also can transform the position of the mover(s) and the main action, so it no longer is what we think it is. Thus, working on suspended or moving images, each protocol starts with a body exploration and transforms itself into a small piece that will be performed in many different ways.

Caroline Grosjean was born in 1976 and educated in ballet and modern dance as a child. She discovered contemporary dance in Lyon, by joining a “danse-études” program and going to university. She later went on being a trainee at the CCN in Montpellier in 1999 and obtained a scholarship in the Martha Graham dance school. Ever since then, she has been working as a professional contemporary dancer for several companies in France, Belgium and Austria. She was invited to participate to danceWEB in 2004, passed the state diploma to teach dance with success in 2007 and got a university diploma in Art, Dance and Performance in 2012. Her own works number the A l’endroit… (2009) solo, Eastern (2010) — a trio for two dancers and a gambist, PARTITIONS (2012) — a performative proposal for public spaces and Héroïnes (2013), where dance and art are meeting. She has also lead a lot of social and cultural activities in schools and theaters, and was invited by the scene nationale in Besançon to constitute a group of non professional dancers, that she has been training for two years now. She recently was one of the choreographers invited to the Abbaye de Royaumont, where she just presented a new project, along with the new Appel group.

eXplore dance festival #9 Programme

eXplore dance festival brings once more in front of its audience an intense and concentrated program, questioning the movement and the body presence, testing the limits of technology versus conceptual art and performance, developing moving stories for a wide public.

The 9th edition of the festival is a reflection of the international residency and production programs developed in the last year, in Bucharest, by 4Culture and WASP, encouraging creative experiments beyond artistic borders, searching for new formats of trans-disciplinary art.

PERFORMANCES

eXplore dance festival #8

edf8

Asociatia 4 Culture in parteneriat cu WASP – Working Art Space and Production anunta organizarea editiei a 8-a eXplore dance festival – Bucharest International Contemporary Dance and Performance Festival.

Perioada: 28 septembrie – 3 noiembrie 2013

Editia a 2-a a Platformei va cuprinde peste 12 productii romanesti realizate in ultimii doi ani, cooperari internationale si premiere.

“Mi-a placut intotdeauna sa experimentez si sa aprofundez stiluri noi, sa ma provoc continuu si, in acelasi timp, sa ma joc si sa ma bucur de rezultate. Asta propun si prin acest curs: o joaca. O combinatie intre dans contemporan, influente de jazz si hip-hop si muzicalitate, care sa il aduca pe dansator in fata propriei persoane, liber, dezbracat de ganduri si pregatit sa isi exprime sentimentele prin miscare.” (Judith State)
